Benjamin Lopez was born on August 17, 2004 in Chicago, IL to the proud parents of Luis and Angela Lopez. Benjamin and his two sisters Ally and Emma grew up in the north side of Chicago. At an early age Benjamin was diagnosed with Autoimmune Hepatitis (AIH) and lived his life with this chronic condition. Ben, as he was called, attended Waters Elementary from kindergarten to eighth grade where he participated in many school activities, programs, sports and made many friends. He attended Amundsen High School for his freshman through senior year and wanted to attend college after graduating high school. As with many challenges in life, Ben’s senior year was the toughest as he struggled to the finish line. Pathways in Education provided Ben the perfect solution to his struggles by allowing Ben to be himself. As Ben went on to attend Pathways the remainder of his senior year, he was committed to graduating and fulfilling his dream. Pathways provided the opportunity for Ben to never give up hope and always try your best no matter the challenges. Ben graduated in June of 2022 and went on to attend community college here in Chicago.

On Sunday January 15, 2023 at 11:15 p.m. Ben was tragically killed on the north side of Chicago while traveling as a passenger in a vehicle by gun violence in the city that he always loved and called home. Although Benjamin’s murder is currently unsolved, efforts in finding justice will not cease. Ben selflessly registered to become an organ and tissue donor at the young age of 17, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to saving lives and making a lasting impact on others. His decision to become a donor reflects his compassion, empathy, and the deep-rooted desire to bring hope and healing to those in need. Ben was truly loved and forever will be missed by all of us that knew and loved him. We miss you Ben!
